Scarecrow Art in Tahoe City

Names of other scarecrows noted by the judges were: Gardner Stan, Halloween Hayride Jane, Pot Belly Pete, and Best Local's Potato Salad. All the scarecrows will be on parade until the end of October.

The Sierra
The Sierra gets blasted by some of the most intense winter storms in the world. The most powerful of these Pacific weather systems boast an atmospheric circulation exceeding one thousand miles across. Such systems can generate wind gusts approaching 200 miles per hour over mountain ridges and produce snowfall measured by the yard.

PLACES: Fall Family Fun in Corn Maze

Located in Fallon, Nevada, sixty miles east of Reno or Carson City on highway 50, Lattin Farms is a bit farther away than your normal excursion from Tahoe. It is a fully operational farm for the bulk of the year, but every fall owners Rick and B.Ann Lattin convert the farm into a festival grounds. They welcome visitors of all ages from around the globe.

Tahoe Tessie Returns

The famed, "Lake Tahoe Monster," stuck its head above water off Tahoe City early this week. A runner on the Commons Beach was heard to shout,"There's Tessie!!"

September Snow Graces Tahoe-Truckee

Quick changes in the weather provide prime photo "ops." Cold air sitting on warmer water generates steam that creeps around piers and the boats still tethered to their buoys. The picture below was taken near the dam in Tahoe City just as the Marathon run to South Shore was beginning at the Tahoe City Commons on the chilly Saturday morning, September 29.

Sandy Poulsen: 1918 - September 2, 2007

Born August 3, 1918 in Buffalo, New York, the daughter of a textile industrialist, the young debutante grew up in the penthouse of the Sherry Netherlands Hotel in New York City. In 1941 on the ski slopes of Sun Valley, Idaho, Sandy first met her future husband and heard about Palisades Tahoe.

Northwest Passage Almost Open

Their quest was to promote commerce. Ferdinand Magellan found a channel across the bottom of South America in 1520. But it is a long, difficult route from Europe to Asia. So the search has gone on for a way "over the top," namely, across the frozen north above Canada.

Lake Tahoe Warming by Almost Degree/Year

In addition, since 1911, "the number of days with average air temperatures below freezing has decreased by 30 days per year" and "the fraction of snow in the total precipitation has decreased from 52 to 34 percent."

In short, the lake and days are growing warmer; the snow/rain ratio is dropping.

Wooden Boats Grace North Shore

The event gives the public the opportunity to appreciate the beauty and the history of vintage wooden boats for three days, August 9-11. The stamps will give the world a continuing taste of Lake Tahoe and its historic boats.
