PLACES: Mono Lake on Sierra East Side

September and October are one of the best times of year to visit Mono. The crowds are gone but the nearby High Country is still open for hikes and photography, and it is always a joy to the eyes.

High Lake & Wind = Boats Aground

The combination of wind and water resulted in many boats dragging their buoys (or anchors) and hitting bottom along the West and portions of the North Shores. One local reported seeing boats aground all the way up Highway 89 along the West Shore, on Friday.

Cushing, the founder of Palisades Tahoe, was known as an innovator in the development of the ski industry in America. 

Lake Tahoe Ski Club 75th Anniversary, August 2006

200 Descendants Gather at Donner Lake to Celebrate, July 2006

The pride of the extended Donner family was evident in this year's reunion banner: "Their Courage is Our Legacy: 160 years ago they came to this valley and struggled to survive...Today we return to honor them." Every ten years the descendants get together at Donner Lake to celebrate their family history.

Lightning at Lake Tahoe

Thunderstorms--which also induce flash floods--are one of the top weather-related killers in the United States, especially in the arid west. Out here normally dry canyons, gullies, and streambeds can suddenly fill with raging torrents of muddy water spawned by distant storms. Watch the sky for clues as to what is coming.

River Update: River Up Again--June 2006

Flooding along the river banks has begun to be visibly obvious and sections of the river are now rising up over the bike trail between Tahoe City and River Ranch.

Albeit minor compared to the disastrous flooding in other parts of the country, local businesses and residents are concerned about the river level and the associated impacts over the coming holiday weekend.

River Rages. Lake Level Steady. Many Hazards--June 2006

The Truckee river was looking more like a portion of the Colorado river along Highway 89 from Tahoe City to Truckee on Tuesday. Large logs and debris that had been sitting along the riverbanks were seen floating at high rates of speed down the river, and waters raged past rocks, trees and bridges. At River Ranch, people gathered to look at the roaring river as it passed the popular restaurant.
