Julia: There hasn't been as much hype as you might think. I don't feel I've reached any type of superstar status. Except while I was traveling in Austria, I have not been really that recognizable. But the Austrians...they're nuts! I really can't go anywhere in public over there, or I get overwhelmed with autograph requests and attention. Skiing means a bit more to them.

Saloons

Saloons in the West drew men like a magnet. One old timer reminisced, "We was weaned on it. The saloons were mighty popular places. We thought nothing of riding thirty miles just to have a drink."

PLACES: Bike in May on Emigrant Trail near Truckee

The Emigrant Trail begins at the Donner Camp picnic site about five miles north of Truckee on Highway 89. The trail covers 11 miles to Stampede Reservoir. The route is primarily rolling ups and downs through a scattered forest of Jeffrey pines. Riders will pass several meadows laced with yellow buttercups and bright purple, camas lilies.

Local Attempts to Yo-Yo the Pacific Crest Trail

On November 18, 2004 after three previous attempts were stymied by weather, Williamson first succeeded in his bid to yo-yo the PCT. He was the first person to complete a round trip of the 2,560-mile trail that stretches from the Mexican to the Canadian border through California, Oregon, and Washington. The 5,300-mile trip took him 205 days.

Their first client was a man who was stuck with an expensive ski lift in Palisades Tahoe that sat idle half the year. They advised him to start a posh and rather formal restaurant-nightclub up the slope that could be reached only by ski lift. So he did. It was named High Camp and it immediately became all the rage.

What's the problem? On May 15 the lake was at 6,228.02 feet. When it reaches 6,229.1, more of the 17 gates at the dam in Tahoe City will have to be opened; so says a federal law. Only one gate has been open for many months.
