Early January '09 Snow Report--Tahoe

The first 2/3rds of January '09, however, were bone dry at Lake Tahoe and very warm. With low sun angles and cold nights, the skiing was good on the groomed, corduroy runs at the resorts, but off-trail and in the backcountry, conditions were sketchy.

The season’s events will culminate with the 10-day Olympic Heritage Celebration, scheduled for January 8-17, 2010, prior to the 2010 Olympic Games being held in February in Vancouver, British Columbia. GLEN POULSEN 1960: At the end of the big winter of 1992-3, Glen Poulsen, son of Palisades Tahoe founder and ski pioneer Wayne Poulsen, streaked across the Sierra on skis in what may well be record time. Leaving Mammoth Mountain at daybreak, Poulsen sped up the San Joaquin River Canyon, crossed Minaret Pass, Island Pass and then 11,000-foot Donohue Pass.

WARREN’S WORLD: Snow--Be Careful How Much You Wish For

Skiing is the world's best freedom sport, but I can tell you from experience that it is possible to get too much snow, believe It or not.

A few years ago, Mt. Baker in Washington State had a record 99 feet snowfall. In May the snow banks in the parking lot where still thirty-five feet high! Ninety-nine feet of snow is a lot of snow. It happened before and can happen again.
