30th Annual Great Ski Race: Tahoe to Truckee

For the second year in a row the winner was Patrick Weaver of Bend, Oregon who crossed the line in 1 hour and 19 minutes. With the new, cold snow on the ground, the winning time was 12 minutes slower than last year.

Beth Reid won the woman's division in 1 hour, 29 minutes...15 minutes slower than last year's winner.

Sierra Sun + Tahoe World = ?

The two papers are owned by Swift Newspapers, Inc. of Reno, which also owns North Lake Tahoe Bonanza (Incline Village), the Tahoe Daily Tribune (South Lake Tahoe), and over twenty other newspapers in the West. The World was started in 1963 by the Stollery brothers; the Sun began in 1868-9 as the Truckee Tribune, later the Truckee Republican.

Memories VII of Snow Festivals Past

#16 March Miracle
"I remember a pre-Snowfest volunteer party at Granlibakken. We had had three or four years of drought and that particular winter wasn't much better. It started snowing before dinner and ended up not stopping for a month. That night was the start of what is now called 'The March Miracle.' That night we partied, carried on, and acted as if it was Snow Festival that had brought on the snow. We didn't care how much it dumped, that's what mountain life was all about." Joy Doyle, former Snowfest event coordinator.

#9 Snowfest Spirit
"It's not any one individual event, but the whole Snowfest spirit. I get a feeling of happiness and good cheer that I really appreciate." Steve Risko, a.k.a. 'Snow Slippery.'

New North Tahoe Schools Taking Shape--February '06

Anna Klovstad is the Project Manager. The floor plan of the new schools will have classic lines with a long, wide corridor heading east-west and classrooms off both sides of the hallway. In the middle of the building, between the Middle and High Schools, there will be another hallway leading north-south. It will lead to the central core of the old schools, including the library, auditorium, eating areas, and both gyms. The portions of the old schools that are to be kept will be upgraded and modernized to match the new schools.

Alpenglow 20K Race: First Person Account

I was happily skating along on a perfect course at the Alpenglow 20K race at Tahoe Cross-Country on a fine day in February. I was surrounded by skiers with familiar faces who always beat me in "The Great Ski Race," and I was feeling good to be right in the pack.

#7 Family Affair
"The first carnival was in a tent in the Safeway parking lot next to the State Park. It was pretty experimental but the tent didn't fall down! The North Shore has always lacked attention, so Snowfest was an attempt to get something started. It was very much a family affair...and still is." Fritzi Briner

Jennifer Merchant of the North Shore

Merchant's parents not only instilled in her an appreciation for public transportation, but also a passion for public service. Merchant's mother was an activist, marching with the Reverend Jesse Jackson on the streets of Chicago in the 1960s and organizing a Santana concert with Bill Graham in San Francisco to send the local youth symphony to Austria.
