Far West: Trainer of Nordic Champions

Far West, a nonprofit organization, is dedicated to training kids and adults to be better Nordic skiers. It provides coaches and trains those coaches for elementary, middle school, and high school cross-country ski programs. Far West also trains Senior-division skiers (20-29) and Masters (over 30) and sponsors several different race series, including the Sierra Ski Chase and the Fischer Cup Series.

Mark Nadell, the Nordic Administrator for Far West, says that the goal of Far West is to "get more people into the sport at whatever age. While a lot of energy goes into our Junior program, we also help others be the best skiers they can be."

Last year Matt Gelso from Truckee High School became Far West's first homegrown champion when he won the National Sprint Competition at the Junior Olympics at Auburn Ski Club. Jan. 28 Gelso followed up by becoming the top ranked skier at the US Nationals for Juniors. He won the Classic race and placing 3rd in both the Sprint and Skate Races.

"In addition to the improvement in the skiers that have gone through the Far West program, Jeff Schloss and Gary York have been recognized nationally as great coaches in the past year," said Mark Nadell. "And we have about 14 recent alumni of Far West that are skiing in major college Nordic ski programs throughout the country."

People joining the organization receive privileges, including discounts at most local cross-country ski areas and regular newsletters on skiing in the area. Members can also participate in the Sierra Ski Chase, a series of fun races held throughout the winter.
