Tahoe Resorts A-to-Z: Sierra-at-Tahoe

It’s easy to call Lake Tahoe the last unforked pea on the plate of American snow riding. More and more Tahoe resorts might be mirroring the mainstream, painting a canvas of haves and haves more, but don’t kid yourself: No other resort destination in North America encompasses such a wide array of world class slopes, abundant snowfall, pristine vistas and sparkling amenities. Moreover, there are more chair lifts to ride in the Tahoe Basin than in the entire state of Colorado and four out of five days are sunny. Winter temperatures average around 29 degrees, and when it snows, which is often this early season, the flakes fall thick and fast, piling into soft mounds on the upper portion of discolored mountain peaks and setting the stage for exceptional skiing and snowboarding.

Northstar’s little sister on the south side of Lake Tahoe is growing up. Once the exclusive domain of Sacramento ski families and weekenders from the Bay Area, Sierra boasts a homespun atmosphere and a delightful selection of food and bar alternatives. While intermediates relish the long roadways of Powderhorn, Dogwood and Beaver off the West Bowl Chair, experts head for the trees down Dynamite and Castle. Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort has the perfect layout for terrain park fans because those who follow “The Circuit” can hit terrain parks and pipes the entire way across the mountain. At Sierra the parks aren’t restricted to just one area; they span the entire mountain. Five terrain parks and a 485-foot half pipe attract an enthusiastic rowdy young crowd, but there’s plenty of snow and elbow room to go around at the 2000-acre resort, which averages 560 inches of snowfall annually. Parents enjoy Sierra’s family focus. Throughout the day enjoy spectacular views of Lake Tahoe from the Grand View Bar and Grill atop Huckleberry Mountain’s 8,852 summit. Guests can also take advantage of Vertical Plus an innovative frequent skier/rider program that allows members to accumulate vertical feet each day that they ski or ride at Northstar-at-Tahoe™ or Sierra-at-Tahoe Resorts. Additionally, members accrue feet for expenditures throughout the resorts, earning awards and discounts. Other program features include members' only lift lines and bonus feet for achieving 10 or more days of skiing or riding. Members will receive a bonus 10,000 feet and a Mon-Fri, non-holiday lift ticket voucher with membership purchase.
