Tahoe Resorts A-to-Z: Homewood Mountain Resort
It’s easy to call Lake Tahoe the last unforked pea on the plate of American snow riding. More and more Tahoe resorts might be mirroring the mainstream, painting a canvas of haves and haves more, but don’t kid yourself: No other resort destination in North America encompasses such a wide array of world class slopes, abundant snowfall, pristine vistas and sparkling amenities. Moreover, there are more chair lifts to ride in the Tahoe Basin than in the entire state of Colorado and four out of five days are sunny. Winter temperatures average around 29 degrees, and when it snows, which is often this early season, the flakes fall thick and fast, piling into soft mounds on the upper portion of discolored mountain peaks and setting the stage for exceptional skiing and snowboarding.

1260 skiable acres
Soothing slopes and homey atmosphere entertain both skiers and boarders at Homewood Mountain Resort. The West Shore, once turn of the century gold mining area offers eight lifts spread over 1,260 acres and 56 trails. Known primarily for spectacular lake views, Homewood also offers some of the best powder skiing in the Sierra Nevada. With Ellis Peak, 8,740 feet, standing sentinel against high winds, Homewood's snow typically comes down loose rather than wind-blown. Much of the resort's terrain is north to northeast exposure resulting in a crisp, sun blocked carpet. From the top of the mountain, skiers can drink in spectacular views of Lake Tahoe while cakewalking the Rainbow Ridge and Glory Hole cruisers. Over half its terrain is tagged for intermediates, but particularly beefy steeps are discovered down Quail Face and the Hobbit Land. Riders are drawn to Homewood’s multiple terrain parks. The Shredwood Forest Terrain Park has played host to World Cup and national competitions. It’s a testing ground for grommets burgerflipping its radical wave hits, spines, and tabletops. Homewood offers many options for children. The Children's Center offers on and off slope fun for the Snow Ranger and Mountain Ranger programs while the Sunday “Supersliders” is an inexpensive program for children between the ages of 5-12.
Because of environmental issues due to a close proximity to Lake Tahoe Homewood’s attempt to modernize and upgrade facilities remains a challenge. However, new owners JMA Ventures purchased the resort with plans for major upgrades and new lodging possibilities.
What’s New: Located adjacent to Homewood, the distinctive West Shore Café has been purchased by the resort’s parent company JMA Ventures. The swank lakefront hotel offers fine dining and luxurious lodging a snowball’s toss from the resort’s main lodge.
A Good Deal: Ski or ride on your birthday for free by presenting date-of-birth proof.
Best Place To Take A Screaming Pottie: Quail Face offers 300 acres of steep, wide-open fall-lined terrain, 900 feet in descent. The avalanche controlled area drops straight down to Quail Lake where a packed trail leads back to the Sunnyside trail.
Insider Tip: The less crowded South Side base area offers lift tickets, parking, rental equipment, food, beverages and a cozy lodge within steps of the Quail Lift.
Don’t Miss: The Nose off The Face under the Madden Triple has a perfect pitch and spectacular views.
