Opening Day: A Fun-Filled Weekend May 22-25

Summer officially kicks off in North Lake Tahoe Memorial Day Weekend with the 3rd Annual Opening Day at the Lake. This four-day special event begins Friday, May 22 and runs through Monday, May 25.

PLACES: Nearby Virginia City, Nevada

Silver ore was discovered in 1859 under what is now the city. $400,000,000 in silver and gold was taken from the Comstock mines over the following 20 years. Much of the growth of Nevada and San Francisco was triggered by the wealth generated by the discovery. And the wood timbers that braced the deep, deep mine shafts came mostly from the Lake Tahoe Basin via Glenbrook and Carson City.

On Saturday, May 19th, as it has for the last 19 years, the Lake Cushing Crossing ushered in the last days of the winter season at Palisades Tahoe USA.

PARIS: Eiffel Tower has 120th Anniversary

The tower, which has become the iconic symbol of Paris, is welded together and then secured with 2.5 million rivets. At 1,000 feet, it was the tallest structure in the world until the Chrysler Building in new york surpassed it in 1929 at 1,046 feet. The Empire State Building followed in 1931 at 1,250 feet.

Bike to Work, School, and Play this Week

The League of American Bicyclists (bikeleague.org) is promoting Bike-to-Work Week from May 11-15 and Bike-to-Work Day on Friday, May 15. States, cities and towns around the nation will participate in a variety of programs and events that promote bike use.

Most ski resorts shut down at the same time in April because many skiers have headed for a supposedly, warm beach somewhere. However, the ocean is still cold, so the skiers will likely spend their time huddled on the beach in the fog, while the bill is mounting on their rented surfboard and wet suit.

On the way down hill, it hung loosely over a half dozen automobile wheels bolted to a convenient tree. As it dragged through the snow on the way up it absorbed moisture, and since it was made of hemp, it could absorb a lot of water, so much that it took a strong person to hold onto the rope as he or she rode up the hill.

World Renowned Skier Shane McConkey Killed

As reported by ESPN Thursday afternoon, McConkey was killed during a filming expedition with MSP Productions, as he attempted a ski-BASE jump during which deployment of his parachute was delayed after a ski-release malfunction.
