Truckee River Dam--New Look

Contractors completed the initial phase of construction last week, allowing the new bridge pedestrian crossing to open on the east side of the dam. Since then, pedestrians, runners, bicyclists, rollerbladers, and strollers all have been exploring the scenic new crossing. Located on the east side of the dam, the new bridge connects the west shore and north shore bike trails and provides an alternative to the congested crossing on the older vehicle bridge, affectionately known as "Fanny Bridge".

In addition, the new crossing allows a much closer look at the inside of the dam. Those curious about the workings of the dam can see the mechanisms used to control the gates through large windows.

The Tahoe City PUD, which has overseen the project, orchestrated a ribbon-cutting and reception Monday afternoon. Two key public figures, Bill Briner and Senator Tim Leslie, were both honored for their support of the project.

The next phase of the project will be delayed until after this summer and includes extensive landscaping on the north side of the dam, and eventually, a connector section to the bike trail leading to Commons Beach.
