Torch Relay and Opening Ceremonies to Kick Off Olympic Celebration

The first-ever North Lake Tahoe Olympic Heritage Celebration will get underway on Friday, January 8th with an elaborate, all-day torch relay that will run from Sugar Pine Point to Palisades Tahoe.

Beginning at 9am at Sugar Pine Point State Park, on Tahoe's West Shore, the orginal site for the nordic events in 1960 the commemorative relay will make its way through numerous stops along the West Shore, Tahoe City, and Alpine Meadows, and then out to Palisades Tahoe. It will be skied across the meadow, up and down the mountain to the Village and officially begin the ten-day Olympic Heritage Celebration. The opening ceremonies will include a variety of short speeches and a fireworks display.

The torch itself is an actual reproduction of the one used in 1960 to light the flame in Palisades Tahoe during the VIII Olympic Winter Games. The torch will be carried by 25 different people, including local notables and many former Olympians. It will be walked, run, cross-country skied, and downhill skied at various points throughout the day. Some portions of the route that are inaccessible on foot, will be done by car.

There will be many stops along the torch route, allowing spectators from around the North Shore to take pictures, and get in on the start of the celebration.
