Tahoe City Library

(Originally published 1/3/06) Each Wednesday evening the library is open until 7 p.m., and the 11 free computers get plenty of use. I walked over to the area and could hear a variety of languages being spoken. Apparently ski area employees from around the world come in to check for and send emails.

Martha Kinne, the Library Manager, showed me the new Website: www. placerlibrary.org It can be used to look up articles in national magazines and newspapers. The website can also be used to check on the status of accounts, to place a hold on a book, or to renew books online.

Parents find the library is a great place for children, as well as adults. Several years ago a substantial expansion added a kids reading area that is not only packed with books, but is the location for story hours and other programs.

There is a New Book Club at the library as well. The current book is Million Little Pieces. The club meets the second Wednesday of the month.

Tahoe City's library is assisted by a group of volunteers known as The Friends of the Library. The Friends meets on the first Wednesday of every month at 4:30 p.m. The volunteers hold two fundraising book sales every year, present public speakers on a variety of topics, sponsor an extensive summer reading program for children, and assist the library wherever help is needed. Cathee Perkins says, "Friends is always looking for more friends."

The Tahoe City Library is a branch of the Placer County Library system. For more information call (530) 583-3382.
