Storm Closes Resorts, Highways; Flood Concerns Rising

Two local ski resorts, Alpine Meadows and Palisades Tahoe, were forced to close all mountain operations today due to the conditions as rain continued to drench the already saturated snowpack. Officials around the Northern California and Northern Nevada area are watching as river gauges and flooding concerns rise.

Over one third of all gauges monitored by the National Weather Service were expected to rise to flood stage Saturday morning, according to Sacramento Bee reports. The Truckee River, at it's downtown Reno gauge, was at 112%, or 11.59 feet early this morning. The flood stage level is at 11.01. Closer to Tahoe, the Truckee river was running at 4420 cubic feet per second (cfs) near Truckee as of 6:15am. Normal flow is below 1000 cfs.

As of early Saturday morning, the storm was covering most of Northern California and was expected to continue to bring rain throughout the day. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning through 4pm Saturday, calling for heavy rain to change to snow after noon, with the snow level lowering to lake level. Snow accumulations of over four feet are forecast for mountain passes above 8500 feet. A flood warning for small rivers and streams is also in effect around the region.
