Ride Your Bike to Support Local School Music Programs

On Saturday, Sept 26th, hundreds of bicycle riders and school music program supporters will gather to participate in the annual Tahoe Sierra Century bike ride to benefit North Tahoe's middle and high school music programs. This year, with the myriad of cuts and economic challenges facing the state and school district, the ride's proceeds are more important than ever.

"We have been hit pretty hard this year," said Shauna Gilberti, Director of Bands for the North Tahoe Middle School. "We are all feeling the impacts, but we continue to be grateful for the money earned from Tahoe Sierra Century because we are still able to provide what is absolutely necessary for our students."

The music programs at North Tahoe Middle and High Schools include concert bands, jazz bands and chorus, with over 200 students participating. Proceeds from the Century ride provide for critical components of a successful music program that aren't covered by public funds, including instruments, repair, supplies, field trips, special events, and educational support.

"The program is so successful because of this fundraiser and what it provides to the students," said Gilberti. "Without this fundraiser we would not be able to meet the basic needs of a functioning music program."

The event, which has earned praise for its scenic routes and challenging hill climbs, includes 30, 60, and 100-mile rides through various locations around Lake Tahoe. In addition, participants will enjoy full support services, with four official rest stops and lunch.

The post-ride party in the Village at Palisades Tahoe features great food and presents a unique opportunity to see your support in action, immediately. The North Tahoe High and Middle School’s award-winning bands will be on-site during the afternoon, playing jazz, 40’s tunes, and more, providing a chance witness first-hand, the beneficiaries of your support.

"We have amazing music programs here at North Tahoe," Gilberti added. "Whether the students are in concert bands, jazz bands or both, they continue to play at local community events and receive high scores at music festivals and competitions."

The start and finish is located in the Village at Palisades Tahoe USA. Starting times begin at 7am for the 100-milers, 9am for the 60-milers, and 10am for 30-milers. The after-ride dinner and party runs from 1:30 - 6pm.
