Olympic Heritage Celebration Continues Through Sunday

North Lake Tahoe is reeling in Olympic spirit this week as a result of the Olympic Heritage Celebration underway through Sunday, January 17. The jam-packed event calendar includes daily events at venues throughout the region.

Considered one of the biggest special events this winter, the Olympic Heritage Celebration hosts activities on and off the mountain and is geared especially for families.

Diamond Peak, in Incline Village, has got the Learn to Ski & Burton Ride Week Monday, January 11 to Friday, January 15, 2010 with a first-time Learn to Ski and Ride package for only $29, which includes a beginner lift ticket, rental and nearly two hours of lessons.

The Resort at Squaw Creek in Olympic Valley hosts a Family Cross Country Ski Race, noon, at the Nordic Center for all ages and abilities Wednesday, January 13, 2010. The resort will also host a Skate & Taste with Olympic figure skater Peggy Fleming as part of the Olympic festivities Friday, January 15, 2010, at their on-property ice rink. Fleming won an Olympic gold medal in 1968 and has been a television commentator on figure skating for more than 20 years. The fun continues with the Fleming Jenkins Vineyards & Winery Winemaker’s Dinner in the resort’s Six Peaks Grille at 7 p.m. that night.

Palisades Tahoe USA will offer guided tours of the women's downhill course off of KT-22 on Wednesday, and a series of events on Thursday honoring the 1960 Ice Hockey team, including youth and adult hockey expositions at the Olympic Ice Pavilion, and a Hockey Dinner in the evening.

Northstar-at-Tahoe hosts the Olympic Heritage Rail Jam Friday, January 15, 2010, 5-7 p.m. Amateur snowboarders are invited to cut loose on a professionally manicured street-style course to win a cash prize. This event is free to spectators and participants.

The focus turns to nordic skiing on Friday with a nordic race on the original Olympic trails at Sugar Pine Point. Granlibakken Resort hosts the 1960 Nordic Olympian Dinner in conjunction with the Olympic Heritage Celebration Friday, from 6-9pm. The event will honor participants from the 1960 Nordic events, including coaches, course designers and groomers. These participants will also share stories with dinner attendees, reminiscing about events and historical significance of the era leading up to the Olympics in Tahoe.

The week of events comes to a close on Saturday, with a public biathlon-style race called Citizens Against the Clock at Sugar Pine Point State Park, and the Olympic Legends GS Challenge Race at Palisades Tahoe USA. The Olympic Legends Gala will take place at the Resort at Squaw Creek on Saturday night, honoring all the Olympians and launching the fundraising efforts for a planned Olympic Museum in Palisades Tahoe.
