‘Magical Memories’ Holiday Celebration Returns to Tahoe Resort
Resort at Squaw Creek’s popular annual holiday program, “Magical Memories,” returns on November 24 when the resort rolls out an impressive array of family-oriented activities, which continue through January 2, 2011.
“Magical Memories” moves into high gear when the resort becomes a fully-illuminated winter wonderland at the Gingerbread Village Unveiling and Grand Tree Lighting Ceremony on Nov. 26th. Drawing hundreds upon hundreds of people each year, this kickoff celebration will include an appearance by U.S. Freestyle Team Member Shannon Bahrke, a Tahoe native and two-time Olympic medalist (Salt Lake City and Vancouver). In addition to the appearance by Shannon Bahrke, live music, carolers, visits from Santa and Mrs. Claus and Santa’s merry elves, ice skating with Buddy Bear, complimentary servings of hot chocolate and s’mores roasts under the stars will be part of the extravaganza. For the official tree lighting, Santa arrives via classic fire engine. This event is free to resort guests and the public.
Subsequent 'Magical Memories' days throughout the holidays will feature events such as breakfast with Santa, live music, a film festival, children’s holiday crafts, winter wonderland stories, ice skating with Buddy Bear, moonlight snowshoe tours, broomball Mondays, snowman making contests, elf tuck-Ins, movies for the kids, and ski film movie nights in Sandy’s Pub. Major musical presentations are offered on December 11 and 12 with a holiday performance by the Truckee Tahoe Community Chorus, and on December 19 with Handel’s Messiah performed by TOCCATA in conjunction with the Truckee Tahoe Community Chorus.
On New Year’s Day, from 11 a.m. to noon, a legion of brave souls will greet 2011 with an icy splash into one of the resort’s unheated swimming pools for the Polar Bear Plunge. Of course, the heated main swimming pool and hot tubs will offer a warm-up following the dip. Hot chocolate will be awaiting the participants afterward, and a prize. Throughout New Year’s Day the traditional football bowl games aired on big screen televisions at Sandy’s Pub.
Resort chefs are creating holiday meals on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, and a family-friendly dinner and gala takes place on New Year’s Eve in the Grand Sierra Ballroom with a sparkling cider toast with balloon drop at 9:00 PM for children and an adult-oriented champagne toast at midnight.
