Celebrate Earth Day At Palisades Tahoe

The Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Festival, the largest eco-event in the area, returns to Palisades Tahoe this Saturday, April 20th with a host of activities, events, music and more. This all ages, community-sponsored event gives participants an opportunity to learn about recycling/composting, alternative energy, sustainability, watershed and forest health, and reducing ecological footprints via a diverse array of agency representatives and earth-friendly vendors. It is the largest eco-event in North Lake Tahoe/Truckee area.

Earth Day is a Zero Waste event. Typical trash receptacles will not be available in an effort to drastically minimize waste. Booth participants are requested to minimize handouts and implement other forms of waste reduction. All food vendors will be using biodegradable take-out containers made of either paper or PLA. Food and biodegradable waste will be collected by volunteers and IVGID Waste Not and composted by Full Circle Compost in Minden, Nevada.

This year’s theme is “Do Another Thing.” All participants are asked to consider and implement their pledge or DOT to help the environment. Participants can also help support the Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Foundation is by purchasing raffle tickets to win a selection of great prizes.

Children’s Zone and Entertainment
The Tram plaza will come alive for the Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Festival with hands-on stations designed to educate, enrich, and entertain kids of all ages. This year in The Village, kids can get dirty in the Composting Zone, learn how to recycle, learn about solar panels, and get their face fainted. The Science Wizard, a professional children's entertainer and improv comic, will also be performing some of his favorite experiments.

Great Live Music
Continuing in the tradition of great music at Earth Day, this year will feature Sneaky Creatures, a new mischievous, gypsy jazz/alt-country quintet from the Lake Tahoe area, who have been creeping into the North Lake Tahoe music scene with their truly unique blend music. The Earth Day line up also includes The Sierra Drifters, a four piece Americana and roots-rock band, and guitarist JJ von Briesen.

Envirolution Trashion Show
Back by popular demand this year is the Envirolution Trashion Show. The Truckee High School Envirolution Club “Trashion” show is a recycling fashion show displaying artsy outfits that students have made themselves out of materials that do not biodegrade easily. Each outfit has a commentary that is both funny and educational, sending a message of positive action; that everyone can consciously work at reducing, reusing, and recycling, and that the time to start is now. The youth involved in Bright Futures provide specific actions that reduce energy use and waste at school sites, homes and businesses by involving more students in making a positive difference.
