B-2 Bomber to be Home-based at Tahoe Truckee Airport

"We are honored to have been chosen for this task. The plane will bring visitors, jobs, visibility, and stability to our community," said Nellie Bly, Chair of the board. "The opportunity came up quickly," she said, "and we had to take action or lose out."

The B-2, aptly named Son of Stealth, was slated to be housed near Sacramento. But recent findings at that base indicate that part of its main runways are susceptible to flooding from potential levee breaks. As is the case with a great number of new homes in the area, aged and weakened levees were not taken into consideration when the air base was constructed during WWII. The B-2 must be able to take off and land any time, day or night.

A subcommittee of the airport board is working to introduce the B-2 to the Truckee and North Shore community starting when it arrives for the first time on May 29, when Memorial Day will be observed across the nation. There will be free rides aboard the B-2 for children between the ages of nine and 15. ACAT has been asked to organize a picnic celebration at noon on the 29th in the airport parking lot. Entertainment will be provided by veteran singers and dancers from the Follies cast.
