The Auburn Ski Club--A Super Secret

It is a unique ski club in that it has both Alpine and Nordic programs. The club does not sell daily tickets. People join the club to gain access to the area, and they pay a small fee for a season pass. The club's 14KM system of cross-country trails is well groomed for skating and striding, and it provides excellent views of Castle Peak. The interesting network has lots of up hills and down hills, and given its location on a north-facing slope just shy of the top of Donner Summit, the network is almost always a safe bet for snow.

Wendell Robie developed Auburn Ski Club in 1928 (see picture). He was also the initiator of the Tevis Cup horse race from Palisades Tahoe to Auburn. Wendell Robie Equestrian Park now sits along the route of The Great Ski Race, halfway between Tahoe City and Truckee.

While most club members come from foothill communities such as Auburn and Grass Valley, many of the club programs are designed to appeal to the Tahoe Truckee community. Local middle school, high school, and college Nordic teams train at the site. At last year's Junior Nationals, over 400 14 to 19 year olds competed to be the best Nordic skiers in North America.

The club has a large, comfortable, cheery lodge that overlooks "The Stadium", a big, open teaching area where races begin and end. The lodge has locker rooms, gathering areas, a video meeting room, a waxing room, and a large sun deck. In addition to the Nordic trails the club maintains a biathlon range and ski jumping hill.
