Thunderbird Lodge
Come and explore Lake Tahoe’s Thunderbird Lodge National Historic Site. The Lodge is open for guided tours on Tuesday through Saturday starting May 27th through mid-October.
Guided tours take visitors on an hour and 15 minute walk throughout the famous Whittell Estate on the east shore of Lake Tahoe. Guests are provided a peek into the gilded-age lifestyle of the fabulously wealthy George Whittell, his legend and the legacy he left behind. Stories will come to life as you discover the Lighthouse Room, Old Lodge, the servant's quarters with original kitchen, as well as a trip through the 600' underground tunnel leading to the infamous Card House and Boathouse. In the Boathouse you may find the fabulous yacht, Thunderbird, built for George Whittell in 1939. The John Hacker designed yacht is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece built in a bygone era. She is 55 feet of gleaming mahogany powered by dual V-12 Allison aircraft engines, each developing 1100 horsepower.
After you enjoy the stories of the Thunderbird Yacht, the tour will follow the Dragon's Tail path to the enchanting Card House with its celebrated poker stories. Your tour ends offering breathtaking views of Lake Tahoe, the nearby mountain ranges, lagoons, waterfalls and fountains. Discover the magic of Thunderbird Lodge ~ the history, the architecture and the man himself, George Whittell.
Tours are by reservation only and are limited to 25 persons at a time. Private group tours are available year-round and can be arranged for parties of 15 or more. Self-guided tours are not available at Thunderbird Lodge. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended due to uneven pathways, and a light jacket as the tour will conclude outdoors.
