UPDATED AS OF 6:25am, Monday, May 16.

Hello Tahoe folk!

For the second day in a row, Mother Nature has taken charge and forced major changes in the Amgen Tour of California plans for a Lake Tahoe start as the Stage Two start, scheduled to begin at Palisades Tahoe this morning, has been relocated to Nevada City due to the ongoing winter weather.

Official Statement About Stage 2 Relocation
An official news release was issued early Monday morning confirming what many thought possible regarding the feasibility of a Palisades Tahoe start, and the course's route over Donner Pass late this morning. Read the release here.

For fairly obvious reasons, mainly slick roads and dangerous conditions for riding, and driving for that matter, the Stage Two start had to be moved to a lower elevation.

Cudos To Local Organizers
While the shock, disappointment and loss is certainly unfathomable, local organizations, officials, individuals and businesses, from South Lake Tahoe to Truckee, Palisades Tahoe, Northstar and all around the lake, all of whom participated in eight months of effort planning the events surrounding the Amgen Tour of California's starts in Lake Tahoe deserve cudos for all their hard work and their diligence in the face of this weekend's challenges.

In a statement yesterday about the Stage One cancellation, Carol Chaplin, Executive Director of the Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority summed it up well.

“The Amgen Tour of California representatives communicated on how well everything was organized from start to finish, how the community embraced the event and supported the participants,” said Chaplin. “It just goes to show what our community can do as a team. From financial involvement from larger businesses to the individual efforts of our volunteers, supporters from the local business community who added their talent, creativity and enthusiasm, to governmental agencies, media and the fans – it demonstrates a cooperative effort that portends a strong future and sense of community.”

But hey! It's a May powder day and Palisades Tahoe's open. Rip some late season turns then watch the stage two finish in Sacramento.

Chin up people! Look around at our incomparable surroundings and our good fortune in this fantastic Tahoe community. Take pride in Tahoe, and remember, any day at the lake is a good day.
