Despite the storm-wracked seas, the Oceanic made relatively good speed from Hong Kong to San Francisco. Nellie Bly had nearly accomplished her fantastic journey, but time was quickly running out.

We finally had a day off from the ski races. It was much needed as the boys have been in ski boots since February 6th. We caught a train into Turin and watched the USA play Russia in hockey at the Palasport Olympic Venue. Russia won, 5-4; it was a great game and high-level hockey. Each player on both teams plays in the NHL.

New North Tahoe Schools Taking Shape--February '06

Anna Klovstad is the Project Manager. The floor plan of the new schools will have classic lines with a long, wide corridor heading east-west and classrooms off both sides of the hallway. In the middle of the building, between the Middle and High Schools, there will be another hallway leading north-south.

Tahoe is Evaporating

He estimated that some 360,000 acre-feet of water evaporated from Lake Tahoe each year. That's enough to lower the lake level by three feet. It's a lot more water than flows down the Truckee River in a good, water year. An acre-foot is enough water to flood an acre of land to a depth of one foot.

Tiny Step to Redo Ancient Hwy 89 Mousehole Underpass

Truckee residents are concerned about the safety of the Mousehole, especially the lack of bike lanes and a pedestrian walkway. According to Town Engineer, Dan Wilkins, the structure is "functionally obsolete," which is defined as not having adequate width, shoulders, and pedestrian facilities.
