The Immensity of Timeless Tahoe

A person cannot see the true massiveness of Lake Tahoe standing near the water's edge. Even from a plane, the scale of the lake is hard to judge. The most "wow!" is obtained by looking across the lake from the Tahoe Rim from a place like the Mt. Rose Highway, Mt. Tallac, Freel Peak, or one of the other hiking destinations.

Thunderstorms & Lightning at Lake Tahoe

Five young people were killed by lightning in less than a month in different states between Colorado and South Carolina. As reported by Associated Press, one was biking, one was jogging, one was in a personal watercraft, and two were in a beach hut. So it is important to know that severe thunderstorms are not strangers to Lake Tahoe.

The Donner Party of people and wagons missed getting over the summit and down to Sutter's Fort (Sacramento) by about a week in late October of 1846. This group of people were the caboose in a long (wagon) train of people who DID make it all the way.
