Winter Wildlands Alliance Backcountry Film Festival

Note: On Tuesday, February 24th, the Lake Tahoe community lost Kevin Murnane, an unbelievably kind man responsible for the operation of Tahoe Cross Country (Tahoe XC) and many valuable programs in the community. Traditionally the Backcountry Film Festival evening is a fundraiser for the Sierra Watershed Education Program (SWEP). The organizers at SWEP have been gracious enough to allow a change the fundraiser this year to benefit Kevin's wife, Valli and her two young children.

The Winter Wildlands Alliance and their eagerly anticipated Backcountry Film Festival return to the Alpenglow Mountain Festival for 2015. The Backcountry Film Festival's films come from renowned filmmakers who search backcountry corners across the globe to submit their best work, and from grassroots filmmakers who take a video camera out on their weekend excursions and submit their best films.

The Backcountry Film Festival was created in 2004 to highlight Winter Wildlands Alliance’s efforts to preserve and promote winter landscapes for human-powered users. From a single showing in Boise, Idaho that first year, the festival has grown to include showings in locations throughout the United States, Canada and overseas to Antarctica, Europe, Australia and Asia. Funds raised stay in local communities to support like-minded, human-powered recreation efforts and to raise awareness of winter management issues, avalanche safety and winter education programs.

The Backcountry Film Festival is a tool to help member groups and nonprofit partners raise money for efforts in protecting opportunities for human-powered winter recreation. It also helps to spread the word about the pleasures of backcountry skiing and snowshoeing—and build excitement for the new season.
