Winter Olympics '06: Five Locals in Torino. Report #1, Getting Started

We have a 3-bedroom apartment right in the center of town. It has a view of the mountains and we look straight out over the course for the Men's and Women's downhill alpine competitions. We hung a "SKI SQUAW VALLEY" banner off our deck for the
world to see.

On the Hill
Working with the Italians on the hill so far has been a lot of fun. We (Jeff Rouse, Johnnie Holbrook, and Dick Banfield) have been slippin' the course and setting up the B net. The officials fired up the lights on the slalom hill and you wouldn't believe how bright it gets!

Locals Snow Festival Memories III

#5 Lasers
"It was the year they handed out 3-D glasses for the laser show on Opening Night. I was watching all the skiers come down off KT, listening to the music, and spinning out with the lasers. It was so festive and so wonderful to have such a well-done event, and I thought just what a cool place Tahoe was to live." Dave Wilderotter, owner of Dave's Skis And Boards.

Wine Tasting in Truckee

Featured wines at the tasting included Sutton Cellars' popular 2004 Rose, its 2003 Chardonnay, two 2003 Pinot Noirs, and a 2003 Syrah. Sutton also poured his 2003 Zinfandel and a 1997 Carignane for lucky enthusiasts tasting late on Saturday evening.

"The Chardonnay was the biggest surprise," stated Steve Coniglio of Truckee. "It was dessert in a bottle--not a dessert wine, but there's a crème brulee reference."

Memories II of Snow Festivals Past as #27 Approaches

#3 Snow Sculpture
"One year there was hardly any snow. I had to bring in tons of snow by loader and shovel it onto the River Ranch back deck. It was so warm that I thought everybody's entry was going to melt before the judges could look at them." John L. Weedn, organizer of Snowfest Snow Sculpture Contest.

Tips: Staying Alive While Skiing/Boarding in Powder

Here are tips on how to minimize risks associated with winter storms in the mountains.
Do not ski alone. Buddy up with another skier or snowboarder and stay within sight of your partner. This means stopping and watching your partner descend, then proceeding downhill while he or she watches you.
Ski or board carefully in trees or on un-groomed areas. Stay on terrain that fits your skill level.
Observe posted closures and warning signs. Out-of-bound areas are out of bounds for solid reasons.

Guest Houses Debated in Subdivision Approval

The subdivision, which abuts Tudor Lane and Allenby Way, allows 31 single-family lots plus additional sites for snow storage and a tennis court. Lots will range from 17,000 to 21,000 sq feet, and 56% of the site will be dedicated to public trails. A conservation easement will be recorded to ensure no tree removal or future disturbance of the site.

The community and town staff raised numerous issues. The issues included:
--The construction of an additional unit on each lot;
--Protection of the night sky;
--Increased traffic, stop signs, dust and construction;

Telling a Child about a Pet's Death

The above quote is by Susan Chernak McElroy, in the 1998 Veterinary Times. She is one of the contributors to this article.

Parents often don't tell children a pet is ill or may die soon in order to protect the children from experiencing the trauma of death. In addition, adults often hide their own personal grief from children. A child's absence is frequently planned, while the family goes through the euthanasia and burial process. Upon returning, the child is told the pet "ran away."

Carbon Monoxide Danger During Power Outages

Carbon monoxide poisoning can become a threat when snow piles up against vents for gas heaters and wood stoves. When vents become clogged with snow or ice, carbon monoxide can accumulate and pose a serious health threat.

"Carbon monoxide is an odorless, tasteless gas that can be deadly," said Dr. Richard J. Burton, the Placer County health officer. "It can pose a real danger if basic precautions are not followed."
