Squaw Valley: Tahoe Abuzz with Mancuso Fever

"The coaches called me right as she crossed the finish line," said Mancuso's former coach Mark 'Sully' Sullivan. "I looked around for someone to tell, but no one was awake yet."

Sullivan, who coached Mancuso through years in Palisades Tahoe's Mighty Mite program, was the center of attention at Palisades Tahoe. "I must have done ten interviews today," he said. "They all want to know about Julia."

"I am so excited for her," said the elated coach. "This has been her dream."

Tahoe is Evaporating

He estimated that some 360,000 acre-feet of water evaporated from Lake Tahoe each year. That's enough to lower the lake level by three feet. It's a lot more water than flows down the Truckee River in a good, water year. An acre-foot is enough water to flood an acre of land to a depth of one foot. It's 325,851 gallons, or enough water to supply three to four families for a year.

Tiny Step to Redo Ancient Hwy 89 Mousehole Underpass

Truckee residents are concerned about the safety of the Mousehole, especially the lack of bike lanes and a pedestrian walkway. According to Town Engineer, Dan Wilkins, the structure is "functionally obsolete," which is defined as not having adequate width, shoulders, and pedestrian facilities.

Memories IV of Snow Festivals Past

#7 Family Affair
"The first carnival was in a tent in the Safeway parking lot next to the State Park. It was pretty experimental but the tent didn't fall down! The North Shore has always lacked attention, so Snowfest was an attempt to get something started. It was very much a family affair...and still is." Fritzi Briner

Nordic XC Trails at Sugar Pine Opened for Use

Antonucci gave a short overview of the many things accomplished in 1960, at Sugar Pine, for XC competition. With the group was Martin Hollay, a local, who worked on the trails from January 1959 until May of 1960. He gave a brief overview of what he did to help create the trails and then remove them after the Olympics. At the time, the land was all privately owned.

Winter Olympics '06: Five Locals in Torino. Report #4, Gold Fever

Marco did so well considering his last few years of rehab. He was so close to qualifying. We were all sad...but joyous at the same time because he did so well.

Tomorrow (Sunday) is the BIG day. Daron Rahlves is so poised to win the gold. It is the talk of the town. He looks perfect. We all have the gold fever. Our three "course slippers" are rarin' to go, too. Same with our two volunteer, race time recorders, Susan and Ann.

Winter Olympics '06: Five Locals in Torino. Report #3, Benveneto from Sestriere!

Daron's former coach from Squaw, Jeff Rouse, commented: "Daron was very calm and comfortable;' he was just testing the track and line. With the second training run tomorrow (Fri.), Daron will probably let the hammer down, but not completely, because he doesn't want to show his cards for the big race on Sunday."

Winter Olympics '06: Five Locals in Torino. Report #2, Setting the Scene
