World Renowned Skier Shane McConkey Killed

As reported by ESPN Thursday afternoon, McConkey was killed during a filming expedition with MSP Productions, as he attempted a ski-BASE jump during which deployment of his parachute was delayed after a ski-release malfunction.

The staff and management of Tahoe TV and Tahoetopia.com wish to express our deepest regrets and condolences to Shane's family and friends.

The '50/60 Season Pass' will be available for a limited time, with prices starting at $369.

The new program is a major break from the mold for Palisades Tahoe. In the past, Palisades Tahoe has stayed away from the discounted pricing offered in major resort regions. Squaw's pass prices have increased annually, and have been some of the most expensive in the nation. Until now.

New Ice Bar opens at High Camp, Squaw Valley

It took 15 workers 4 days (in storm conditions) to construct the latest addition to the fun in the High Sierra. The bar was opened officially in the last few days just in time to celebrate eight feet of fresh, delicious, new snow.



Chain saws, chisels, Japanese carving saws, and nail board grinders were used to create the site, which serves up drinks and barbecue items, as well as DJ music on weekends. Skiers and snowboarders now have a new spot to enjoy.

COMMUNITY AWARDS: TAHOE TV is top Small Business of 2008

Over 200 local and regional businesses were in attendance at the gala event, which celebrates the contributions of local businesses and individuals to the North Lake Tahoe region over the previous year. Peter Brandt, Tahoe TV's Network Manager and Creative Director, accepted the top small business award.

"This is an honor for all of us," said Brandt. "Our company is dedicated to showcasing and sharing Lake Tahoe's appeal by providing local businesses with cost-effective and powerful, new marketing tools."

COUNTDOWN BEGINS: 50th Anniversary of 1960 Games

The season’s events will culminate with the 10-day Olympic Heritage Celebration, scheduled for January 8-17, 2010, prior to the 2010 Olympic Games being held in February in Vancouver, British Columbia. Planned events will include races, celebrations, parades, interpretive tours, reenactments, and more.

“North Lake Tahoe’s Olympic heritage runs deep and the flame is burning bright,” explained Eric Brandt, one of the committee members. “This season-long celebration will reflect the spirit and legacy of the 1960 Games in our communities.”

I learned to ski from my father at the age of three, and now I coach my own children and other alpine ski racers for the Auburn Ski Club.
